Chinese Missiles Can Reach the American Continent

China’s navy owns missiles capable of hitting the entire American continent. On Friday, April 23, in celebration of their 72nd anniversary, the People’s Liberation Army Navy (PLA Navy) showcased submarines that can carry 16 of these missiles.

China first tested these submarine-launched ballistic missiles (SLBM) in November of 2018. Known as JL-3, or Julang 3 (“Big Wave”), this upgraded missile has over a 6,200 mile (10,000 km) range. The PLA Navy has six Type 094 submarines that can carry twelve JL-3s. Two of them are the Type 094A submarine, with enhanced radar and sonar technology, as well as the ability to hold sixteen missiles. These were added last year, during the 71st anniversary celebration of the PLA Navy.

South China Morning Post quoted an anonymous source saying, “Before the upgrade, the submarine was armed with the inferior JL-2 that could only hit the northeast United States, but now it’s able to cover the whole American continent.”

China already had the JL-2, capable of a single blast 67 times greater than the bomb dropped on Hiroshima, or three to eight MIRVs, smaller nuclear warheads able to hit different targets. The range of these missiles was 4,500 miles. In order to target the United States with the JL-2, the Type 094 submarine would have to get past the First Island Chain, a line of U.S. military bases off the coast of China.

The JL-3 has the same capabilities of the JL-2, but its increased range enables China to hit the American continent while still stationed close to China’s coastline.

The Director of National Intelligence John Ratcliffe said, “China poses a greater national security threat to the U.S. than any other nation—economically, militarily, and technologically.”

In a Dec. 3, 2020, Wall Street Journal opinion editorial, Ratcliffe wrote: “If I could communicate one thing to the American people from this unique vantage point, it is that the People’s Republic of China poses the greatest threat to America today, and the greatest threat to democracy and freedom worldwide since World War ii. The intelligence is clear: Beijing intends to dominate the U.S. and the rest of the planet economically, militarily and technologically.”
